The Surly Cross-check is a jack-of-all-trades. You can commute on it, you can tour on it, you can ride single-track with it, and you can race/ride Almanzo with it. You can even put skinny tires on it and ride the fast group ride, if you're into that sort of thing. Whatever you can do on a bike (within reason), the Cross-check is up to the task. It comes by this incredible versatility by having HUGE tire clearance. We've installed 700x45 Panaracer Fire Cross knobbies on a Cross-check, with no clearance issues whatsoever. There are probably a few 700x50 tires that will fit. If you decide to go down to a lightweight 700x28, that's cool, too (you could go skinnier, but why?). Clearance and braze-ons for full fenders and front and rear racks. I/Jim put a Tubus Duo front rack on mine, which makes my Cross-check capable of touring and camping trips with enough carrying capacity that I don't have to go without any of my usual touring comfort items. Available (as of October 2011) in Robin Egg Blue and Black, in sizes 42 thru 62 cm.

Surly's page on this bike is here.

$1150 with the standard Surly parts spec, but we can reconfigure that build in many different ways. If you have questions, call us. If not, you can order here, and your bike will be ready for pickup in a few days (we'll call you). Pick-up in store only, which means you'll have to pay state and local sales taxes.

If you routinely like to carry lots of weight in your panniers, say, for heavy-loaded touring or for extreme commuting, consider the Surly Long Haul Trucker, which is everything the Cross-check is, but beefier. Also, for shorter riders, we tend to recommend the LHT because the smaller wheel size is better proportioned to a smaller frame.
